NO!!!

NO. We all do it. The dog is jumping, chasing, chewing, stealing... we say NO and the immediacy of our tone stops the dog's behavior in its track. You have the dog's attention now. He's no longer doing the behavior you didn't like. You then turn your attention back to what you were doing.

What have you taught the dog? Have you taught the dog what to do instead? Have you given him guidance for what you would prefer he do? Or have you taught him that if he is jumping, chasing, chewing, stealing...you will pay attention to him?

So the next time you say "NO" louder. Then you might incorporate a punishment into the no. A squirt bottle, an electric shock, a rolled up newspaper. Again and again and again. Until the dog is afraid of your attention so that behavior may eventually stop.

But WHAT have you taught the dog? Have you taught the dog that if he goes to his "place" he can chew on a toy or bone? Have you taught him that if he sits instead of jumping he gets praise and good attention? That if he "leaves it" he has freedom to choose from his toys or even receives a treat? This is the difference between education and intimidation. We educate the dog on the preferred behavior rather than intimidating the dog. The dog is less likely to develop behavior issues later in life when taught in this manner. And you have a dog that you enjoy and want to include in your life.
